The how-to guide of how to make a classic ballet bun
It’s almost time for RAD exams and many of you are already preparing for the final year concerts and performances. Hair, just like make-up and costumes, is a very important part. Although there are many different ways to do a bun, here you can find some instructions to achieve a perfect bun.
To make a classical bun you will need:
- Hair brush
- Hair elastic
- Water spray (optional)
- Hairspray (optional)
- Hair pins
- Bobby pins
- Hairnet

And now, follow these 5 simple steps!
STEP 1: Brush the hair
Make sure your hair is free from tangles.
STEP 2: Make the ponytail
Spritz the hair with the water spray. Brush all the hair towards the centre back of your head. Then, tie your hair up into a ponytail. If you have curly, thick or fine hair, you may need to spray your hair with water a bit more before securing into a ponytail.
STEP 3: Twist into a bun
Hold the ponytail at the end and twist it until it is all twisted into a rope. Then coil the ponytail into a flat circle around the hair elastic. Tuck the ends of the ponytail under the bun. Then place 3-4 hair pins around the bun to secure it, don´t take your hands off the bun.
STEP 4: Place the hairnet
Place a hairnet over the bun. At this stage, you can make any adjustments to the shape of the bun.
STEP 5: Secure it with hairpins
Insert as many pins as you need until it feels secure. You can fix the loose hairs with hairspray. A finished ballet bun should be round and even in shape, and sit smoothly against the head.
Good luck!
